Why Consistency Matters

DEEP BREATH…Hold…Exhale

It takes time.

I just listened to a clip of Casey Neistat on The Rich Rolls Podcast.  He was talking about social media and how it takes patience and time to be successful.  He talked about a YouTube creator; Mr. Beast (Jimmy Donaldson).  He is top 5 of all YouTube views and earners (2021).  Mr. Beast’s channels get over 1 billion that’s a B in BILLION per month.  Well the story goes it took Jimmy 7 years of make videos consistently, day  after day week after week before he had a video that hit 1000 views.  That’s a commitment to a craft you love.  But that’s also consistency.

Why am I talking about viral videos on YouTube and what does that have to do with breathing, cold baths and mental health.  Well hang in there and I’ll you’ll find out.

Consistent cold showers or cold baths

  1. Reduce your resting heart rate
  2. Improve mental toughness and clarity
  3. Increases the strength of your immune system while reducing inflammation

Consistent meditation

  1. Reduces stress
  2. Improves sleep
  3. Increases mental focus

Casey spoke about how we live in a world where we can now check up on everything in real time.  How you can order anything off Amazon and have it land at your house within days or sometimes even hours. You can watch whatever movie or TV series you feel like watching and learn about anything you’re interested in, in an instant.  We don’t have to wait for anything. So why should we have to wait for heath related results?

Where does that leave us?  What’s the point I’m trying to make?

Like everything else in life practicing these things; controlled breathing, breath work, meditation, cold exposure, sauna, running or whatever your “thing” is, they all take time to see the benefits/results.  We can’t do 3 days in a row of meditation not feel a change and say “this doesn’t work”.   We also claim we don’t have 5-10 minutes to pick up a healthy habit but then we kill hours on our phone scrolling social media, YouTubing or just wasting time.  The best and worst part of life is that good things take time.  While we’re in pain we don’t want it to take time.  We want Amazon to delivery the package so we feel better now which is why lots of people turn to their addictions as they provide that immediate dopamine hit that we crave.  That quick hit of dopamine hit and we only focus on that for the time being.  We temporarily forget but knowing that the fallout will leave us further behind can quickly lead us into depression and regret.

This game is the long game.  This game is about being healthy, not just doing healthy things periodically.  There’s always room for grace and improvement when we fall down but let’s be real if you’re here, decide you’re going to take some small but consistent steps to do healthy things to be healthy.
